BREAST MILK IS THE IDEAL food for human infants. High in maternal antibodies, live maternal immune cells such as lymphocytes, and nutrients, it's also easy to digest. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends breastfeeding to ensure “the best possible health as well as the best developmental and psychosocial outcomes for infants.” 1 For instance, infants who were breastfed did slightly better on cognitive development tests. 1 Breastfeeding is a powerful analgesic when used during painful procedures such as heel-stick blood sampling. 2 Children who had been breastfed showed more resilience to anxiety. 3
