YOU'RE RAKING LEAVES in your yard when you hear a yell from next door, followed by thud. You run over and find your neighbor, Bill Logan, 46, lying on the ground on his left side. Nearby, a ladder is propped up against the side of the house.

What's the situation?

Mr. Logan tells you that he was on the roof cleaning his gutters when he slipped and fell, hitting his left side on the edge of the roof and striking the ladder on the way down. He says he didn't lose consciousness, but his left shoulder and chest hurt and his legs are numb.
