AGING IS A KEY RISK FACTOR for developing breast cancer. Of an estimated 182,460 women in the United States expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, about 50% will be 65 and older. 1

On average, a 65-year-old woman in the United States can expect to live about 20 more years. 2 But mistaken assumptions about aging, life expectancy, and ability to tolerate treatment may result in undertreatment of breast cancer in older women.
