OFTEN CALLED San Joaquin Valley fever, coccidioidomycosis is caused by the Coccidioides immitis fungus, which is typically found in California, and Coccidioides posadasii , which is typically found in Arizona. 1 Common in the dusty soil of these states, these organisms cause about 100,000 infections annually. 2

C. immitis and C. posadasii are highly infectious and cause illness when dust particles containing the organisms' airborne arthrospores are inhaled. Once in the lungs, the spores multiply rapidly.
