ALTHOUGH RARELY LIFE-THREATENING, back injuries can be life-altering, causing ongoing physical, economic, and emotional problems. Patients miss time from work and in some cases must change occupations or stop working. Pain may dramatically decrease mobility and exercise tolerance, alter bowel and bladder function, and impair sexual activity.
