ABSTRACT

Pseudocholinesterase deficiency (PD) is an uncommon genetic disorder that can cause sensitivity to neuromuscular blocking agents in affected persons. When neuromuscular blocking agents such as succinylcholine or mivacurium are administered to susceptible individuals during surgery, the result is prolonged intercostal muscles paralysis, because of the slowed metabolic breakdown of the drug due to this genetic disorder.
