ABSTRACT
The first part of this two-part column ("Ethics and Empathy [Part One]," JCN, 28(1), p. 11), looked at the vital role empathy plays in patient care. Empathy and compassion are the foundation of altruism, the caring dimension of nursing. Altruism is putting the interests of patients above your own. Because we are all self-interested, errant creatures (i.e., sinful), it's only empathy and compassion that make it possible for people to live together in families and communities for very long without being utterly destroyed by selfishness. For Christians, altruism is not optional because altruism is not just how God expects us to live, it is how he lived.Nurses recognize and share the feelings of their patients. This is empathy. But empathy doesn't provide enough reason to act altruistically toward patients.
