ABSTRACT
Peggy Lau Flux stood alongside a glistening pond of the Sacred Lotus nestled in the heart of the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide, and a flood of memories poured from her childhood days in Hong Kong.As a young girl her parents, who migrated from China after the travesties of the Second World War, explained why this lily, Nelumbo nucifera, thought to have been around since 500 BC, was held in such deep respect across the Orient."They told me the most noble plant grew out of the mud, was covered in mud, but somehow changed itself and the winds made it clean and beautiful," she said. "They said it's like life. If you feel hopeless or sorry for yourself, or feel there is no opportunity for a better life, then that is where you stay. But if you look up, like the plant, you see light and rise from the mud."This nice pinch of philosophy partly reflects Mrs Lau Flux, who has spent a lifetime with a positive outlook on life, adapted to meet new challenges, shared her knowledge, and is now using her worldly experiences in her role as Chairperson of the Committee of Management of the Joanna Briggs Institute. She was also a member of the final board of Royal Adelaide Hospital, taking her further still from the pulsation of corporate banking in which she gained international recognition with Citibank and Standard Chartered Bank in Hong Kong. She was instrumental in the implementation of the first electronic banking system in China, and her trade initiative dealing with risk-asset weighting issues in the banking industry worldwide. They are feats not unnoticed by those who fill the halls of the admired. It has been a fascinating voyage, yet never too far from the sacrosanctity of Nelumbo nucifera, and one that many might not expect given her new clinical boardroom officialdom. But like the Sacred Lotus, with its stamens said to have powerful medicinal qualities, there is an unexpected natural link with health care after all."Like health care centres, banking is partly about business management,"
