ABSTRACT
When he left his Essex, England school at the age of 16, Professor Adrian Esterman could not have imagined that he would end up settled in Australia with an extensive international career behind him and the promise of many more influential years ahead. Currently the Foundation Chair of Biostatistics in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of South Australia, Esterman's younger years were peppered with classroom bullying that, though he achieved well academically (particularly in English and Maths), was harmful enough to motivate his early exit from the school system.Leaving his unpleasant school experiences behind, Esterman immediately dove into the working world where he landed entry-level work utilising his mathematics skills in an accountancy firm, and later in the finance department of Unilever in London. But this kind of work was not enough to satisfy his drive for higher achievements, and Esterman applied to and was accepted as a 20 year old 'mature age' student at the University of Bath in Somerset. Here he undertook a challenging courseload in Mathematics and Statistics, and, despite his still-developing time management skills (he admits to spending too many hours at students bars and pubs and perhaps occasionally being distracted by "fraternising with female students"), graduated with an honours degree in statistics in 1972.While completing this degree, Esterman's interest was peaked by medical research, so following his undergraduate studies he decided to take an MSc in Medical Statistics. During his postgraduate studies at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Esterman's name was recommended for a position with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Geneva, however, he did not hear back on the job and finished his studies before moving on to take a position as a Research Fellow at Aberdeen University medical school.
