With the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act designed to address the fragmentation in the health care delivery system, the role of the board-certified case manager has become increasingly in the spotlight. The ongoing evolution in health and human services is an incredible opportunity to build visibility for the board-certified case manager who plays a key part in the transformation of care delivery. Professional case managers possess the requisite knowledge and expertise to fulfill the care coordination role, which is at the heart of new and emerging models of care aimed at improving quality, efficiency, and effectiveness. Now, the field of practice must be ready for the next challenge: developing a pipeline of qualified professionals who can step up to the demands of improving health and human services care delivery.The Commission for Case Manager Certification (CCMC), as the first and largest nationally accredited organization that certifies case managers, has been bringing a critical message to physicians, consumers, lawmakers, and other stakeholders: Board-certified case managers must take part in designing and implementing new models of care. The CCMC has renewed its focus on government relations, working with legislators and policy makers to enhance awareness and create an impact on the people who ultimately will create health care policies.The Commission and certified professionals must be at the table to have a say regarding case management roles, functions, responsibilities, reimbursement, and related issues. We cannot leave it to others to determine how and where case managers participate. The Commission is making the connection that care coordination equals case management equals board certification. From health care organizations to Capitol Hill, this message has been delivered and well received.Now, the case management field has to take on the next part of the battle: workforce readiness.
