ABSTRACT
The critical role that nutrition plays in the health of the world's people is well documented (International Food Policy Research Institute [IFPRI], 2010, 2011; United Nations Children's Fund [UNICEF], 2009). In fact, nutrition is so important that it is included in Millennium Development Goal 1, Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger, with a target of halving "the proportion of people who suffer from hunger" (MDG Monitor, 2007, n.p.). The goal is to decrease the number of children under the age of 5 who are underweight and to increase the number of people whose dietary energy consumption is above the minimum level.How do we assess nutrition on a global level? One approach is by means of the Global Health Index (GHI). The index combines three indicators, each of equal weight: (1) the proportion of undernourished as a percentage of the population (reflecting the share of the population with insufficient dietary energy intake); (2) the prevalence of underweight in children under the age of
