ABSTRACT
U-Systems' (Sunnyvale, Calif.) somo-v Automated Breast Ultrasound System (ABUS) has been FDA-approved for marketing. The ABUS system may be used to produce ultrasound images of the breast for breast cancer screening following a negative mammogram and is intended for use in women with dense breasts who have negative X-ray mammography results and have not had previous invasive procedures.The ABUS system allows radiologists to review ultrasound images from different angles, producing several images. The imaging technology can help reveal hidden tumors in the dense breast tissue and has been shown to detect small masses in dense breasts. It is used along with standard mammography.According to the company, a trial that examined 200 mammograms from asymptomatic women with dense breasts-with and without supplementary ultrasound images from the somo-v ABUS device-found that use of the images increased breast cancer detection by about 30%.
