In the growing arena of clinical and nursing informatics, preserving the bottom line and preventing harm to our patients are two important tenets for return on investment for large-scale clinical IT (information and technology) projects as well.In my organization, Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI), we are in a rapid cycle of clinical IT implementations for all of our 80 hospitals and more than 350 owned family practice and specialty clinics. This provides opportunities for improving the actual care delivery processes, the documentation of that care, and the process for charging care. With automation, we intend to diminish variations in care via standards and evidence-based practices.
