ABSTRACT
THE CHALLENGES for chief nursing officers (CNOs) to ensure that nurses practice in a safe and competent manner are never ending. New research evidence, new products, and new processes contribute significantly to the complexity of safe practice. This column addresses information on developments specific to mediation aides, chemically dependent nurses, nursing job histories, and reporting to the board of nursing. Additional information on all of these regulatory issues can be retrieved from the referenced publications.Medication aides are nonlicensed personnel whose services are utilized in 34 states to deliver medications to patients. The majority of these nurse extenders are employed in nursing homes or long-term care facilities. Budden1 reviewed state information about licensed personnel and nonlicensed aides who distribute medications and found no documentation of a difference in error rates.Oversight of medication aides occurs from various state agencies, including boards of nursing.
