I recently cared for a 4-year-old with multiple injuries, including broken bones and burns. She was brought into the ED by her mother, who claimed the child had fallen down the stairs and landed against a hot woodstove. Because this explanation wasn't consistent with the child's injuries, police and Child Protective Services were called in. Both the mother and her live-in boyfriend were detained for questioning .

Meanwhile, the child was being X-rayed and prepared for surgery. The mother begged to be with her daughter as she was taken to the OR. But the ED physician, who was upset by the brutal nature of the child's injuries, refused her request. Later, he told the nurses (privately) ...
