    A health care provider prescribed medication to control a patient's newly diagnosed hypertension in November. The patient didn't reveal that she couldn't afford to fill the prescription until January, when her insurance coverage would renew. In December, her blood pressure was still elevated, so the practitioner increased the dose. The patient filled the newer prescription in January, when her benefits were reinstated, but taking the higher dose caused her to develop hypotension so serious that she had to be hospitalized for treatment.

    Even patients who have health insurance may find purchasing prescription and over-the-counter medications a financial burden. Here are some measures to prevent a problem like this with your patients.
