ABSTRACT

If you wonder why the rising cost of health care was such a major issue in this year's presidential debates, just look at Figure 1, which shows increases in the consumer price index (CPI) for medical care as compared with increases for all consumer items and all consumer items less medical care.1 It shows that the cost of medical care in this country has risen at a much greater rate than other consumer expenses since the mid-1980s and that the situation is progressively getting worse
