All too often it seems, we witness or hear about incidents between nursing colleagues or nurses and their patients that demonstrate a clear lack of compassion. In some cases, we know what's at the root of the problem, namely understaffing, long shifts, and burnout.

This article isn't about the slippery slope we can start down when we have fewer staff members and more responsibility, extended work shifts, and job burnout. Instead, it's about a case of patient-to-patient compassion that was so touchingly heartfelt that it moved the staff of a nursing/rehabilitation center in Waycross, GA, to tears and reminded us of what's sometimes missing in our day-to-day work.
