I am one of those people who have a hard time embracing nursing theories. They seem so complicated and abstract that I find them difficult to understand and tend to rely only on physiological theories to understand nursing phenomena. I recently started reexamining my views about theory and am slowly developing a new appreciation for its importance to the nursing profession. I reached the following conclusions (which many other nursing scholars discovered long ago):

1. Theory and research are far better tools than trial and error, or past experience, when attempting to solve problems we encounter in nursing practice 2. Nurses should concentrate on nursing problems, not just follow doctors' orders. 3. As professionals, we must look for problems in our practice, develop theories to deal with those problems, and test the theories with research. ...
