BEVERLY CRAIG, 24, comes to your ED complaining of a runny nose, itchiness, nausea, difficulty breathing, and swelling around her face and neck. She noticed these symptoms shortly after eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch, which was about an hour ago. She reports that she has no known allergies. You quickly assess her airway, breathing, and circulation and check her vital signs. She's dyspneic, tachypneic, and anxious, but not in acute distress at the moment.

Based on the timing of her symptoms, what do you suspect is the cause? Most likely, Beverly is experiencing a moderate anaphylactic reaction to peanuts (see Common causes of anaphylaxis ).
