THE demographics of the United States have changed over the last several decades. More than 28 million Americans are foreign-born—up from 9.6 million in 1970. More than 44 million Americans speak a language other than English at home, and more than 300 different languages are spoken in the United States. 1 Racial and ethnic health disparities are linked to poorer health outcomes and lower quality care. 2 Language and cultural issues can have a significant impact on these disparities. 2
