External fixation is a method of immobilizing an extremity using percutaneous pins or wires that are anchored in the bone and attached to a frame on the outside of the skin. The pins or wires are used to stabilize, secure, and ensure anatomical alignment of the bone as well as to provide optimal healing time. (See EF device .)
