ABSTRACT
Although the number of sports-related injuries that result in hospitalization is relatively small compared with those that are treated in emergency departments (EDs) or outpatient clinics, it represents the more serious end of the spectrum of injuries. These injuries can have profound negative consequences for young people in terms of their physical, mental, and emotional health. It is not uncommon for an injured adolescent or child to modify his or her level of sports participation after hospitalization. In some cases, they may not be able to play a particular sport anymore.
