Review Video
The ability to perform basic activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, walking and eating, can be quickly and easily measured using the Katz index. Understanding the ability of patients to perform these skills is critical in providing comprehensive inpatient care and in determining discharge plans. This assessment is found in the Try This series tool called Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living (ADL).
This video discusses and demonstrates the Katz ADL assessment with an older adult following a prosthetic hip replacement and helps the staff determine specific needs as he is discharged to his home, an apartment which is on a the third floor of a building without elevators. Involved in the discharge planning process are the Occupational and Physical therapists who have also worked with him during his hospital stay. This video organizes information in chaptered formats for viewers interested in specific aspects of the program.
