MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION

Prospective authors are requested to send abstracts of unsolicited manuscripts to the Editor prior to submission of the completed work. A cover letter should provide the address and telephone number of the principal author, the estimated submission date of the completed manuscript, an estimate of its length (in typed, double-spaced pages) and a description of any artwork to be included.

Only previously unpublished work written in English should be submitted; all text, including solicited material, is subject to editorial review and revision and, upon acceptance, becomes the property of Cancer Nursing™ and may not be published elsewhere without written permission from both the editor and the publisher.

Title Page
The title should be brief and specific. Indicate author(s), professional title(s), and affiliation(s). Indicate source of support if appropriate. Specify preference for author description to be used in footnote on the first page of the published article.

Abstract
This should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate page and is not to exceed 200 words. It should be factual, comprehensive, and meaningful on its own.

Key Words

List three to six concise terms for indexing purposes on a separate page following the abstract.

FORMAT

Manuscripts should be typewritten and double-spaced on 8½ x 11" white bond paper with ½" margins on all sides. Each page, including tables, legends, and references, should be numbered consecutively. Quotations must be accurate and give full credit to source. Permission to quote and reproduce material previously published must be cleared by the author, and a copy of the letter granting such permission should accompany the manuscript. When reporting units of measure, please use the International System of Units value, with the conventional unit equivalent in parentheses. The length of an article in printed form can be determined from the equation of 3½ typewritten manuscript pages to one unbroken page of text in the Journal. Article length will necessarily vary according to subject matter and style, but authors should generally aim for manuscripts of between 1 and 20 pages unless the Editor has given specific approval otherwise. Submission of the final accepted manuscript in electronic form is encouraged by the Publisher. The preferred medium is a Microsoft Word or compatible wordprocessor file on a 3.50 in. disk. Please inquire for further details.

Tables
Tables should be typed double-spaced, each on a separate page in the usual upright position; tables that have to be typed and printed sideways must be brought to the attention of and approved by the Editor in advance. Excessive width and length should be avoided as they necessitate a considerable reduction in type size. Tables should be numbered consecutively, separate from the illustrations, and each should contain a brief, descriptive title. The data presented must be logically and clearly organized; it should be self-explanatory and supplement, not duplicate, the text.

Illustrations
Illustrations are encouraged. For photographs, submit black and white glossy prints and on the back of each, lightly write in pencil the figure number, the last name of the senior author, and an indication of which is the top edge of the picture when not obvious. Drawings (including graphs and charts) should be done in black india ink on heavy white paper and, ideally, be approximately twice their intended final size. Lettering should be large enough to allow for size reduction, and preferably done professionally.

If the author would like to submit art electronically, the images may be sent as a Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) or as an Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) file in Adobe Illustrator®, Adobe Photoshop®, or QuarkXPress®. A laser proof must accompany the electronic art that is being submitted on disk.

Legends
Legends to the figures should be typed double-spaced on a separate manuscript page. They should be numbered consecutively, and should be brief and specific.

REFERENCES

The references should be numbered consecutively, typed double-spaced, and follow the format outlined in American Medical Association Manual of Style, 9th ed. Journal titles should be abbreviated, without periods, as in Index Medicus. Please carefully arrange bibliographic elements and apply punctuation and spacing as noted below
  • Journal article: Authors' surnames and initials. Article title: subtitle. Journal Name. Year; volume (issue number): inclusive page numbers.
  • Book: Authors' surnames and initials. Book Title. Edition number. Place of Publication: Publisher; year: inclusive pages.
  • Chapter in an edited book: Authors' surnames and initials. Chapter title. In: Surname and Initials of Book Authors or Editors. Book Title. Edition number. Place of Publication: Publisher; year: inclusive pages.
  • World Wide Web: eg, Health Care Financing Administration. 1996 statistics at a glance. Available at: http://www.hcfa.gov/stats/ stathili.htm. Accessed December 2, 1996.
Authors are responsible for bibliographic accuracy and must check every reference in manuscript and proofread again in page proofs.

COPYRIGHT
Copyright on all articles published in Cancer Nursing™will be held by the publisher, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. In view of the present U.S. copyright law, effective January 1, 1978, it is necessary that each co-author of a submitted manuscript sign a statement expressly transferring copyright in the event the paper is published in the Journal. A copyright transfer form will be sent to the corresponding author by the Editor's office when receipt of a manuscript is acknowledged

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION

Lippincott Williams & Wilkins will accept submission of electronic versions of manuscripts in conjunction with the traditional paper version. The preferred storage medium is a 3½ inch disk in an MS-DOS compatible format.

Files should be submitted in one of the following standard word processing formats: Microsoft Word or WordPerfect. While we can convert from other word processing formats, the vagaries of the conversion process may introduce errors. Do not submit ASCII text files.

Each submitted disk must be clearly labeled with the name of the author, item title, journal title.

The file submitted on disk must be the final corrected version of the manuscript and must agree with the final accepted version of the submitted paper manuscript. The disk submitted should contain only the final version of the manuscript. Delete all other material from the disk.

Please follow the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style as given in "Instructions to Authors."

Note, however, that while the paper version of the manuscript must be presented in the traditional double spaced format, the electronic version will be typeset and should not contain any extraneous formatting instructions. For example:
  • Use hard carriage returns only at the end of paragraphs and display lines (e.g., titles, subheadings)
  • Do not use an extra hard return between paragraphs
  • Do not use tabs or extra space at the start of a paragraph or for list entries
  • Do not indent runover lines in references
  • Turn off line spacing
  • Turn off hyphenation and justification
  • Do not specify page breaks, page numbers, or headers
  • Do not specify typeface.
  • Care should be taken to correctly enter "one" (1) and lower case "el" (l), as well as "zero" (0) and capital "oh" (O).

Please observe the following conventions concerning dashes: Use a single hyphen with space before it for a minus sign, use a double hyphen (with space before and after) to indicate a "long dash" in text, and a triple hyphen (with no extra space) to indicate a range of numbers (e.g. "23---45").

Illustrations will be handled conventionally. However, figure legends should be included at the end of the electronic file.

Non-standard characters (Greek letters, mathematical symbols, etc.) should be coded consistently throughout the text. Please make a list of such characters and provide a listing of the codes used.
