Dear Colleague,

December 6th through 12th is National Handwashing Awareness Week! Hand hygiene plays a central role in preventing the transmission of infections. Protect your patients by performing hand hygiene routinely and thoroughly before and after patient care.

Remember these basics:

  • When using an alcohol-based hand rub, apply it to the surface of one palm and rub over all hand surfaces until your hands are dry.
  • When washing with soap and water, wet your hands before applying the soap, then rub vigorously for at least 15 seconds, and dry thoroughly. Use a paper towel to turn off the faucet to avoid recontamination of your hands.

Those of us who've been in practice for a long time ask the question,"What is the future of nursing?" I am happy to say that the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in Collaboration with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has established a major initiative on the Future of Nursing. According to the RWJF website (http://www.rwjf.org/), this initiative will examine the capacity of the nursing workforce to meet the demands of a reformed health care and public health system. Check out FOCUS ON: RWJF Future of Nursing Initiative.

Anne Dabrow Woods, Chief Nursing Officer of Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW) and Ovid and Publisher of AJN, hosted a lively, free webcast that shed light on one hospital's cutting-edge approach to delivering evidence-based nursing care at the bedside. If you missed the live event, you can view the archived webcast here.
