Dear Colleague,

As we head into the summer months, I am reminded of the importance of sun safety. Last year, the FDA approved sunscreen labeling changes to make it easier for consumers to make educated purchasing decisions. These changes, which will go into effect at the end of 2012, require manufacturers to follow guidelines for labeling with regard to sun protection factor (SPF), elimination of the terms "sunblock," "sweatproof," and "waterproof,"  as well as changes to the Drug Facts box. You can read  Food and Drug Administration's Final Ruling on Sunscreens: Have We Simply Rearranged the Deck Chairs on the Titanic? for more information on these labeling changes.

We know that in addition to using sunscreen, other means of protection are important too.  The SunAWARE acronym is helpful for remembering five easy action steps for skin cancer prevention and early detection

Don't forget to check out the articles in More Resources for more about melanoma and skin cancer prevention. As always, these articles are free to read!
