U.S. Adult Immunization Schedule Updated for 2020

Shared clinical decision making recommended for HPV in adults age 27 to 45 considered likely to benefit

MONDAY, Feb. 3, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- In a clinical guideline published online Feb. 4 in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) outlines its 2020 Recommended Adult Immunization Schedule.

Mark Freedman, D.V.M., M.P.H., and colleagues from the ACIP present the recommended adult immunization schedule for the United States for 2020.

The authors report changes to the 2020 adult immunization schedule. These changes include routine annual influenza vaccination for all persons aged 6 months and older without contraindications. No preferential recommendation is made for one influenza vaccine product over another. All persons with HIV aged 1 year or older should be routinely vaccinated with the hepatitis A vaccine. The hepatitis A vaccine is also recommended for persons working in settings of exposure; any person who wants to be protected against the hepatitis A virus infection may be vaccinated. Catch-up human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is recommended for all adults through age 26 years who are not adequately vaccinated. Shared clinical decision making is recommended regarding HPV vaccination for adults aged 27 to 45 years who are not adequately vaccinated; discussion of vaccination should be considered for those most likely to benefit.

A one-time booster of meningococcal B vaccination is recommended for persons aged 10 years or older determined to be at increased risk during an outbreak. Pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine is recommended based on shared decision making for older adults without immunocompromising conditions, cerebrospinal fluid leak, or cochlear implant who have not previously been vaccinated.
