Abstract

Minimally invasive injectable dermal fillers and volume enhancers for facial rejuvenation are effective tools in the aesthetic provider's armamentarium to combat the ravages of aging. The anatomy of facial skin, fat, and bone and how these key structures change with aging is provided. This article focuses on the Food and Drug Administration-approved products for use in the United States market. A review of the polymeric characteristics, strengths, limitations, history, mechanism of action, when, where, and how to use each class of dermal filler/volume enhancer is intended to aid the aesthetic provider in clinical decision making. Practical techniques of how to treat clients with dermal fillers/volume enhancers, what to watch for in terms of adverse events, and how to address potential adverse events are discussed to ensure that the aesthetic provider is well informed and equipped to deliver optimal clinical outcomes with these impactful products.
