Iowa CE Requirements for License Renewal

Iowa.jpegAs a nurse in the state of Iowa, you are required to earn continuing education to renew your active license.

Renewal Requirements

RN

  • Every three years
    • 36 hours of continuing education 
    • 1 hour related to the identification and reporting of child/dependent adult abuse offered by the Iowa Department of Human Services (for those who regularly examine, attend, counsel or treat dependent adults or children)
LPN 
  • Every three years
    • 36 hours of continuing education 
    • 1 hour related to the identification and reporting of child/dependent adult abuse offered by the Iowa Department of Human Services (for those who regularly examine, attend, counsel or treat dependent adults or children)
Advanced Practice
  • Every three years
    • 36 hours of continuing education as required for RN license renewal
    • 1 hour related to the identification and reporting of child/dependent adult abuse offered by the Iowa Department of Human Services (for those who regularly examine, attend, counsel or treat dependent adults or children)
    • At least 2 hours regarding the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guideline for prescribing opioids for chronic pain, including recommendations on limitations on dosages and the length of prescriptions, risk factors for abuse, and nonopiod and nonpharmacologic therapy options.
