Louisiana CE Requirements for License Renewal

Louisiana.jpegAs a nurse in the state of Louisiana, you are required to earn continuing education to renew your active license.

Renewal Requirements

  • NEW: Every two years
    • A minimum fo 30 hours OR
    • A minimum of 900 practice hours               
Advanced Practice
  • Every year for APRNs without national certification:
    • 30 hours at the advanced level and directly related to the full scope of the advanced practice role and population focus for APRN whose role and population focus does not provide for certification/recertification
    • 6 hours annually (12 hours every renewal perior) in pharmacotherapeutics for APRN with prescriptive authority
    • APRNs with Controlled Substance Authority need three hours of continuing education (including drug diversion training, best practice prescribing of controlled substances, appropriate treatment for addiction and other matters regarding the prescribing of controlled dangerous substances) as a prerequisite of license renewal. 
  • APRNs who are nationally board certified meet the renewal requirements for their Louisiana RN license by holding an approved certification.

The Nurse Practitioner and Journal of Nursing Administration, 3.3 contact hours

NCPD  Appropriate Use of Opioids in Managing Chronic Pain
AJN, American Journal of Nursing, 3.0 contact hours
