Abstract

Maximizing the effectiveness of an information systems purchase is critical for every health care organization. This article addresses the overall process for evaluation, selection, and purchasing information systems. While not directed toward the selection of a specific software application, the paper focuses on the bedrock principles and processes for successful system selection results, including system requirements definition, the request for information and request for proposal process, product demonstrations, reference site visits, and contract negotiations. Specific attention is given to the importance of defining software application requirements around the business and operational needs being automated. Specific tips and procedures are offered, along with essential information about the current vendor industry.
