HPNA's Collaborative Initiatives

A major aspect of the 2009-2012 HPNA strategic plan is the goal to be "recognized and respected as leaders in palliative nursing across healthcare settings and public eye." One of the strategies continuing into 2010 to effect this goal is HPNA's purposeful collaboration with other national nursing organizations.

* In December 2009, Sue Cox, 2010 HPNA president, and Judy Lentz, CEO, participated in a 1-day summit conducted by the Oncology Nursing Society relative to "Care of the Cancer Patient," where they promoted inclusion of palliative care from the time of diagnosis.

* HPNA members will be presenting a preconference at the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association annual conference in September 2010.

* A member of the Thoracic Nurses Association was invited to join the 2010 Clinical Practice Forum Planning Committee as the topic is "Breathing Easier: Palliative Care and Advanced Pulmonary Disease."

* HPNA has accepted an invitation from the American Academy of Nursing to serve on a task force they have formed to develop a policy statement on crucial conversations about end-of-life care.

* Current HPNA members are involved in collaborative work related to pediatrics-both on a national and international level.

* HPNA is collaborating with Quality Insights of Western Pennsylvania.

* HPNA has communication with the Supportive Care Coalition of the Catholic Health Initiative.

* HPNA continues as a member of the Hospice and Palliative Care Coalition, the National Quality Forum, the National Institute on Aging's Improve Quality in Palliative Care (I QUIP) task force, and the Nursing Organization Alliance.

2010 HPNA Awards

The following is a summarization of the HPNA Awards presented at the 2010 American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM)/HPNA Annual Assembly. More details and photos can be found on the HPNA Web site (Awards/Recognition menu).

The HPNA Leading the Way Award is HPNA's top award and is intended to recognize a person who has "led the way" in some aspect of hospice and palliative nursing. Ida M. Martinson, PhD, MS, FAAN, has been named the 2010 HPNA Leading the Way Award winner in recognition of her work as a pioneering researcher in the areas of palliative care for the dying child, family caregiving, and bereavement. She is lovingly known as the "Grandmother of Pediatric Palliative Care."

Dr Martinson's career began as a diploma graduate of St Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in Duluth, MN. She earned her BS and master's degrees in nursing administration from the University of Minnesota. In 1972, she earned a PhD in physiology from the University of Illinois. Dr Martinson was recruited to the University of California, San Francisco, School of Nursing in 1982 with a well-established research program focusing on the care of children with terminal illnesses. She became the chair of the Department of Family Health Care Nursing and remained in that position until 1990.

Dr Martinson has received national and international recognition for her work and published more than 100 articles, 65 book chapters, and six books. She is recognized for her willingness to share her data with young investigators as a mentor. She has held numerous visiting professorships, served on editorial boards for five professional journals, has received the Humanitarian Award from Pediatric Nursing and the Lifetime Honorary Membership in the Organization of Death Educators, was elected to the American Academy of Nursing, served on the International Organization for Migration Governing Council, and is acknowledged as one of the founders of the Childhood Cancer Foundation in Taipei, Taiwan.

Additionally, HPNA annually honors an individual with distinguished nursing achievement. HPNA recognized June Lunney, PhD, RN, for this prestigious award entitled the HPNA Distinguished Career Achievement Award. June Lunney, PhD, RN, retired as the associate dean for research at the West Virginia University School of Nursing in 2008. She received a bachelor's degree in nursing from Villanova University and a master's degree and PhD from the University of Maryland at Baltimore. From 1991 to 1999, Dr Lunney served as an extramural program director at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) during which time she helped to develop NIH support for research on end-of-life issues. She was also the lead author on the 2003 Institute of Medicine's report, Describing Death in America. In 2004, Dr Lunney chaired the planning committee for the NIH State-of-the-Science Conference, "Improving End-of-Life Care." Her current research, "Describing Trajectories of Dying," focuses on functional decline at the end of life. In January 2010, Dr Lunney became HPNA's director of research.

The recipient of the 2010 award is Maryjo Prince-Paul, PhD, APRN, ACHPN, FPCN. Dr Prince-Paul is a postdoctoral fellow at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. This is a NIH/NCI Prevention Research Education Post-Doctoral Training Program position, considered to be a highly competitive position that speaks to her commitment to a research career. The Ruby Jones Nursing Hero Award honors a nursing colleague who has given more than is expected in his/her professional responsibilities. It is awarded to an individual who has clearly gone well beyond the "usual and expected" requirements with their patients or to those who care for their patients or have provided some other humanitarian nursing response. The 2010 recipient of this award is Natalie T. Casey, RN, of Pittsburgh, PA, who is being recognized for her compassionate care that goes beyond physical care. The octogenarian believes, "Nursing isn't just delivering medicines and changing bandages. If you listen to somebody, it's surprising how much their outlook can change."

The Marian Ryan Artistry in End-of-Life Nursing Care Award recognizes the creative work that captures the richness of caring for a person with life-limiting progressive illness. The 2010 recipient of this award is Hazel Jackson, MN, RN, ACNS-BC, CHPN, for Heavenly Scene, a relaxation and guided imagery session that provides comfort for individuals facing their terminal illness. Face to Face: Funders and Recipients

Annual Assembly puts the face on fund-raising for hospice and palliative nursing! At the annual assembly, attendees participate in events supporting one cause: excellence in hospice and palliative nursing. This past March was no exception and through three special events, HPNF reached a new high for funds raised at the annual assembly!

"Care for the Caregiver," a new walk-a-thon event, was successful in raising funds and increasing awareness of HPNF. More than $6400 was raised by 28 individuals or teams who gathered more than 242 sponsors and walked more than 198,000 steps! As part of the International Year of the Nurse, 27 nurses were remembered with $626 in donations to the Memorial Wall, and 79 Key to Your Heart cases were sold! In total, more than $9500 was raised for nurses through the three events!

Five nurses were presented with HPNF Conference Scholarships for Annual Assembly on site! HPNF scholarships are made possible through donations from events like these. Applications and other scholarship information are available at http://www.hpnf.org.

Ninth Annual Certification Recognition Event

The National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses (NBCHPN) held its Ninth Annual Certification Recognition Event on March 4, 2010, in Boston, MA, during the AAHPM/HPNA Annual Assembly.

The recognition event was very well received and provided a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge certified nurses, nursing assistants, administrators, and the employers who support certification. Many interested noncertified individuals attended to familiarize themselves with hospice and palliative specialty certification and the value that it holds.

More than 200 individuals attended the recognition luncheon event this year. The recognition event agenda included the introduction of the NBCHPN Board of Directors; a presentation by David Swankin from the Citizen's Advocacy Center on Certification and the Public Perspective; and recognition of the 2010 NBCHPN Certificant of the Year Award recipients and 2009-2010 Employer of the Year Award recipient as well as a prize drawing in which certification scholarships were given to five lucky individuals attending the luncheon.
