Inventor and American board-certified prosthetist John E. Rooney has developed a custom-made ankle-foot orthosis with the trade name Ulcer Healing Orthosis or UHO. The US-patented device helps to support the lower leg and foot, reducing mechanical stress on the bottom of an ulcerated foot. This allows blood flow to the ulceration, encouraging healing to continue while walking. The Medicare Durable Medical Equipment, Orthotics, Prosthetics and Supplies policy group is currently reviewing the UHO and, if accepted as a covered device, possible reimbursement will be made available to patients.

The Vitala Continence Control Device (CCD), from ConvaTec, Skillman, New Jersey, has received a 2010 Medical Design Excellence Award presented by Canon Communications LLC and sponsored by Medical Device & Diagnostics Industry magazine. Vitala CCD is a nonintrusive device that provides temporary continence to individuals with an end colostomy. This technology allows individuals to manage their colostomy without a pouch, belt, or irrigation. Additionally, Vitala CCD seals against the stoma to prevent release of stool while permitting gases to vent through an integrated, deodorizing filter. Its design minimizes the noise and odors that sometimes accompany pouch use.
