I'm pleased to announce that Maureen Shawn Kennedy has been named AJN's Editor-in-Chief.

Kennedy first joined AJN in 1998 as news editor and special projects director. Over the years, she's assumed additional responsibilities, becoming editorial director in 2008 and interim editor-in-chief 18 months ago.

Kennedy is one of the first nursing journal editors to recognize the importance of having an active and interactive online presence to engage readers. Through http://ajnonline.com, AJN's blog Off the Charts, Facebook, and Twitter, AJN has established itself as the benchmark for other nursing journals.

AJN's Journal Oversight Committee offered these words, "We congratulate Shawn Kennedy and will continue to support Ms. Kennedy and her staff as they strive to maintain and further AJN's quality, leadership, and service to the nursing profession."

Kennedy received her bachelor of science in nursing from the Hunter College-Bellevue School of Nursing and her master's degree in nursing from New York University, both in New York City. She has authored many journal articles and book chapters, and is the editor, with Thelma Schorr, of 100 Years of American Nursing: Celebrating a Century of Caring (Lippincott, 1999), a pictorial documentary of nursing in the United States in the 20th century. She's been a visiting nurse scholar at the World Health Organization's Office of Nursing and Midwifery, and was recently inducted into the Hunter College Hall of Fame.

Please join me in congratulating Shawn Kennedy on this well-deserved appointment.
