Abstract

Background: Splenic lacerations are a common injury in motor vehicle crashes.

Objectives: This case report examines 2 minor side impact crashes resulting in grade IV spleen lacerations.

Case Report: Both crashes resulted in very little crush to the vehicles. Both occupants were properly restrained and had side impact air bags deploy. Neither patient initially reported to the hospital secondary to the low-grade damage to their vehicles and no clinical symptoms.

Conclusion: A high level of suspicion for solid organ injury in minor side impact crashes should be maintained even when seat belts and side air bags are utilized.
