Abstract

This case study describes an event that transformed and solidified the trauma team at a level I facility in the Midwest. Administration of a newly created massive blood transfusion protocol on a severely injured trauma patient, implemented outside the normal confines of the trauma bay, is presented. The lesson brought home to us as a trauma team was the value of clearly defined evidence-based protocols, an experienced multidisciplinary trauma team, and effective communication to successful implementation.
