Abstract

A literature review was conducted to investigate the characteristics of new graduates and hospital environments that contribute to Generation Y new nurses' susceptibility to role stress and the characteristics of orientation programs that help them successfully overcome the phenomenon. Implications include deliberate preceptor pairings, presence of an advisor/mentor, and focus on professional development. These strategies may help improve retention of the Generation Y new graduate, reduce role stress, and foster empowerment.
