Abstract

The 1970s ushered in a major revolution in the delivery of trauma care in the United States. A new concept described as "a systems approach to trauma and emergency medical services" brought forth new trauma care professionals including trauma nursing as a prominent and essential feature. The trauma nurse coordinators were instrumental to the nation's successful trauma/emergency medical services systems (EMSS) regional development. A historical perspective of the important role of those pioneer nurses and their leadership contributions are presented with appreciation.
