In a global economy, knowledge of international approaches to healthcare is useful for nurse educators, new graduates, and practicing nurses. Many schools and organizations provide international opportunities for nursing students. A quick Google search lists several universities that focus on international experience: University of Washington, Azusa Pacific University, San Diego State University, University of Virginia, and University of Iowa. In addition, students may want to look at various organizations that provide international experiences.

 

The International Educational Site (http://www.intstudy.com/) provides information related to courses, living, and learning in other countries and includes and applications for students seeking international experiences Links are readily found to programs in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Nursing Education International Concepts (http://nursingeducationinternationalconcepts.com/index.html) provides the practicing nurse with information related to continuing education opportunities in other countries. The International Scholar Laureate Program (http://www.scholarlaureate.org/about-us) provides opportunities to learn about nursing in Australia or China.

 

Nurse faculty and nursing students can use the Internet, professional contacts, or "word of mouth" to discover more about international opportunities. Educators and students can only benefit from broadening their perspective of nursing to include international issues, practices, and competencies.
