Abstract

ABSTRACT: The prevalence and incidence of a pressure ulcer developing in the pediatric population is much higher than some healthcare providers may realize. Pressure ulcers can occur at a very fast rate if preventative measures are not initiated. These skin injuries are costly, difficult, and time consuming to heal and are also prone to recurrence once they have been established. The purpose of this article is not only to increase the awareness of the pediatric pressure ulcer, but also to stress the importance of the maintenance of a healthy skin barrier. Classification of pressure injuries, risk assessment tools, and preventative strategies will also be discussed.
