Lewis C. Cantley, PhD, has moved from Harvard to be Director of the newly established Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medical College and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, where he will direct basic, translational, and clinical research. The 18-story, $650 million Center is set to open in 2014. At Harvard he was William Bosworth Castle Chair in Medicine and Professor of Systems Biology at the Medical School and Director of the Cancer Center and Chief of the Division of Signal Transduction at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. His new position took effect on Oct. 15.
Lisa A. Carey, MD, has been appointed Chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and Physician-in-Chief of the NC Cancer Hospital. She has been a member of the UNC faculty for more than 10 years, and is the Richardson and Marilyn Jacobs Preyer Distinguished Professor in Breast Cancer Research, Professor of Medicine, Medical Director of the UNC Breast Center, and Associate Director for Clinical Research at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has awarded Laurie H. Glimcher, MD, Dean of the Weill Cornell Medical College and Provost for Medical Affairs at Cornell University, the Ernst W. Bertner Memorial Award for distinguished contributions to cancer research. Her work has focused on cytokines, particularly as related to inflammatory diseases of the immune system and cancer immunology. As part of the honor, which she was presented with at the Symposia on Cancer Research last month, she also gave an accompanying lecture, speaking on "The Stress Sensor XBP1 in Cancer."
Paul Mischel, MD, has joined the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research to head the new Laboratory of Molecular Pathology in San Diego, and will hold a professorship in the UC San Diego Department of Pathology. His research focus is on analyzing molecular patterns in glioblastoma to develop personalized treatments. He was most recently at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and Broad Stem Cell Research Center, where he was Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Molecular and Medical Pharmacology.
The Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology has announced the following new appointments and re-elections to the Board of Directors:
* W. Charles Penley, MD, FASCO, Chair-elect, to succeed Martin J. Murphy, DMed Sc, PhD, on Jan. 1. Penley has been a member of the Board since 2005, and has been Treasurer for the last five years. He is a partner with Tennessee Oncology, PLLC.
* Ann Lurie, member of the Board of Directors. She is founder and President of the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Foundation, Lurie Investments, Inc., and Africa Infectious Disease Village Clinics, Inc., in Kenya. She also serves on the Board of Trustees of Northwestern University, where she is an Adjunct Professor in Preventative Medicine. She holds the Diana, Princess of Wales Professorship in Cancer Research and a Professorship in Oncology at the Lurie Cancer Center.
* Beth Karlan, MD, member of the Board of Directors. She is Director of the Women's Cancer Program at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, and Director of the Gilda Radner Hereditary Cancer Program. She is also Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
* Additional Board reappointments and elections include: (1) Richard L. Schilsky, MD, FASCO, reappointed to serve another three-year term and elected to serve as Treasurer in 2013; (2) John H. Glick, MD, FASCO, to serve as Secretary in 2013; (3) Lawrence H. Einhorn, MD, FASCO, reappointed for another three-year term; and (4) Thomas A. Marsland, MD, FASCO, also reappointed to serve another three-year term.
Ohio State University College of Medicine's Department of Biomedical Informatics received $1.3 million from the National Library of Medicine, for development of an innovative approach to integrating information within patients' electronic health records, generating a longitudinal medical history to accelerate recruitment of patients into clinical trials. The principal investigator is Albert Lai, PhD, Assistant Professor.
The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) is inviting applications from physicians for the position of Editor-in-Chief of the 8th edition of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual.
The manual, planned for publication in 2015, will be the newest iteration of the tumor, node, and metastasis (TNM) system, which has been the major system for the staging of adult solid tumors worldwide since the mid-1980s. The new edition will also continue the tradition of coordination with the UICC's TNM committee.
