The number of ED visits involving adverse events related to zolpidem increased more than 200% from 2005 to 2010, according to a report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. About 75% of these visits were in patients 65 years or older, followed by those 45 to 54 years of age. The report emphasized that the dosages of drugs containing zolpidem should be reduced by half for the elderly and for women, and particular caution should be used in patients taking central nervous system depressants.
