Abstract

Resilience can greatly influence the recovery and adjustment process after stroke and may be an important determinant in how well individuals can bounce back and get on with their lives, despite deficits and life changes. This article examines the contributing factors to high resilience in individuals and describes how these factors can be directly affected by stroke. The benefits of resilience in stroke recovery are discussed and strategies for increasing resilience are explored, including enhancing dispositional attributes, promoting socialization, and improving self-efficacy, self-esteem, and motivation. Future research directions are identified.
