Boosting Radiotherapy Dose Increases Survival in Children with Ependymoma

Lorenza Gandola, MD, Head of the Pediatric Radiotherapy Unit at Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori in Milan, reported results of a study of children with intracranial ependymoma and measurable residue after first- or second-line surgery showing that a hypofractionated radiotherapy boost was feasible and improved the rate of local control (Abstract OC-0310).

In another study of children with ependymoma, Anne Ducassou, MD, of Institut Claudius Regaud in France showed that a radiotherapy dose of more than 54 Gy increased survival in children with localized cerebral disease. The multicenter trial assessed the role of age, grade, and dose on outcome in 177 patients over a period of 13 years (Abstract OC-0309).

Rosalind L. Perrin, MSc, PhD, of the Centre for Proton Therapy at Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland, discusses a new pencil-beam scanning proton delivery technique called rescanning, which appears to make it possible to help limit the dose of radiation to surrounding tissues and organs by compensating for the motion of the tumor in the chest caused by breathing. She and her colleagues used an anthropomorphic model that simulated tumor movement in the chest of a patient with lung cancer (Abstract OC-0484).
