Abstract
* The Food and Drug Administration is placing a boxed warning on the labeling of all opioids, including opioid-containing cough medicines, and benzodiazepines to emphasize the risk of excessive sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death if these drugs are used concomitantly.
* Nurses need to be aware of this serious risk and of the need to minimize the combined use of these drugs.
