Abstract

* Use of direct-acting antiviral drugs in the treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) may produce a reactivation of hepatitis B virus infection. These drugs now carry a black box warning citing this risk.

* Nurses should assess patients prescribed direct-acting antivirals for HCV for a history of hepatitis B infection. Patients beginning treatment with these drugs should be taught the signs of liver disease.
