Abstract

Self-Determination Theory (SDT) is a theory of motivation with robust empirical support (Deci et al., 1999; Ng et al., 2012). It addresses intrinsic human tendencies to behave in effective and healthy ways. According to SDT, conditions that support people's experience of autonomy, competence, and relatedness energize volitional motivation, improve performance, enhance creativity, and enable persistence and adherence (Deci & Ryan, 1985). Importantly, SDT suggests that the extent to which these 3 central psychological needs are thwarted will negatively impact a person's wellness and vitality. In short, SDT informs how to enhance human motivation and human wellness (Deci & Ryan, 2012). Grounding the PCMH in these core constructs will ensure that robust theory is used to optimize patient well-being.
