Abstract

The life journeys of 5 hospice nurses were studied in images and narratives to discern the causal past that led these nurses to working in hospice. Using cocreative aesthetic inquiry, a qualitative research method, the author discovered a causal life pattern among these nurses. Profound loss and grief before becoming a hospice nurse, endurance and resilience, hospice nursing as a means of transformation, and a life pervaded by spirituality distinguished the life journeys of these nurses. Implications for nursing education, recruitment and retention are considered.
