Deaths from falls in older adults increased 31% from 2007 to 2016. An examination of mortality data from all 50 states found that nearly 30,000 people age 65 years or older died from fall-related causes in 2016. The highest age-adjusted rate of deaths from falls occurred in Wisconsin and the lowest occurred in Alabama. Death rates from falls increased fastest among those 85 years and older, which is also the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that providers screen for fall risk and use interventions that modify risk factors, including gait and balance issues and polypharmacy.
